Unsifted Flour

I made a cake and realized that I didn’t sift the flour. What should I do?

The proper procedure is to sift the flour before using it (whether for baking or any other edible use) with a sifter that is suitable according to Halacha. This ensures that if there are any weevils or other insects present, they would be caught in the sifter. However, if you forgot to sift the flour and have already used it, as long as the flour appears clean and fresh, you should not suspect that there were any insects, and it is permissible to consume the food.

If you suspect there might be insects, for example, if you see insects in the flour you did not use and you have already mixed or baked with it, you should avoid consuming that food if it results in significant loss. If it would cause a considerable loss, it is permissible to eat it, as there are some Halachic doubts about this situation. (Nevertheless, it is always best to consult your Rabbi in such cases rather than making a decision on your own).
